Renee says: "Very special pendant featuring the god Mercury, the guide of souls to the underworld. He is the patron god of financial gain, commerce and eloquence. Mercury is a major Roman god, being one of the Dii Consentes within the ancient Roman pantheon. Mercury was paired with the female goddess Ceres. Ceres was a goddess of agriculture, grain crops, fertility and motherly relationships. This impressed steel button with fine copper burnish depicts Mercury with his winged helmet. This is a rare and collectable piece. Set in solid sterling silver with hinged bale. Original button shank still visible on reverse. Brown cord/rope included with piece. However this remarkable pendant also looks beautiful with a silver chain or pearls. Click on images for up close peeK."
Length: 2.25 inches long 1.5 inches wide. See photo of pendant next to .50 cent Australian coin for size reference.
One of a kind. Does not in include silver cuff, but does include brown cord/rope necklace as shown in photo.
Note: I am often asked how I know the age of the buttons I use. I have an extensive library of button books and can authenticate just about every button I use! I have also been to the international button festival in the USA twice, and once to the Melbourne, Australia button gathering. These events always host a great series of talks on buttons and I've learned so much about these wee and often rare treasures.
I received a lovely pair of earrings from my sister. They came from Renee Blackwell Design, Queensland, Australia. They are so very elegant, so classy that they will be my go-to earrings. I have known Renee for many years and have other pieces she has made, and they are the most unique and special pieces that I own. When I wear them, I always get the nicest compliments!
